“This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple. The philosophy is kindness.”

Dalai Lama

Kindness

I think the word kindness sums up who the Dalia Lama is.

I’ve read a couple of books by the Dalai Lama, The Art of Happiness and An Introduction to Buddhism, he has such a pure way of saying things. In coming to understand myself in the world, this is one of the best quotes I’ve found. My ‘religion’ is not in a building, it is not someone telling me what I should do, it is in me. In my heart.

I have some more thoughts on kindness in this post: Being Kind vs Being Nice

The 14th Dalai Lama

“The Dalai Lamas are believed by Tibetan Buddhists to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are realized beings, inspired by the wish to attain complete enlightenment, who have vowed to be reborn in the world to help all living beings.”   The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama is a man of peace.

He began his studies at age 6 and at 23 sat for his final exam and was awarded the Geshe Lharampa degree, equivalent to the highest doctorate in Buddhist philosophy.  At 90 years old, he has spent his whole life in service to the world and the Tibetan people. He has been living in exile in India since 1959, due to the invasion of Tibet by China in 1950.

Be kind to yourself as you find your way.
